The Nu Guide: How to check your vulva

When was the last time you checked your vulva? Having a regular look-see is an important part of looking after your physical health.

Here’s a step by step guide on how to do it, and what to do if something isn’t your version of ‘normal’.

*all vulvas are different and ‘normal’ isn’t the same for everyone. We recommend that you book in to see a medical professional if you’re unsure or have any concerns.

What you’ll need:

  • a safe space

  • a handheld mirror

  • good lighting

Revisit our Anatomy 101 diagram if you need to remind yourself of the layout of your vulva.

What to do:

  • Use your dominant hand to check the area usually covered with pubic hair

  • Part your labia majora with your fingers and look at the labia minora

  • Also check the skin between your vagina and your anus

What to look and feel for:

  • Anything out of the ordinary that may be itchy, lumpy or hard

  • Eg. an ulcer, cut, rash, changing moles or freckles, unusual discharge or bleeding

  • Also check the skin colour around the vaginal entrance and around and above the urethra

It’s really important to know your ‘normal’ so you can recognise anything that has changed.

What to do if something has changed:

  • Make a mental note of anything that looks different or unusual. It might also be helpful to write down what you see

  • Book in to see your GP, a gynaecologist or sexual health clinic
